Minister President Rehlinger calls it a "milestone" and "probably the biggest investment in the history of Saarland".

As the SOL.DE editorial team and other media report, billions are now flowing into green steel. Minister President Rehlinger confirmed what is probably the largest investment in the Saarland and described the plans away from coal and coke, towards hydrogen: the Saar steel industry has decided to invest 3.5 billion euros to switch to climate-neutral steel. This was announced by Stahl-Holding-Saar (SHS), Saarstahl, Dillinger Hüttenwerke and Montan-Stiftung Saar on 2 December 2022. From 2027, up to 3.5 million tonnes of low-CO2 steel are to be produced annually in Saarland and 4.9 million tonnes of CO2 saved.

SHS wants to become a role model in the EU

The investment sum had been decided subject to public subsidies. The necessary documents have been submitted, but the approval process has not yet been completed, it said. In order to be able to achieve the EU's climate targets for 2030, the supervisory boards had given the official go-ahead with their decision. It is the goal of SHS to become the European role model for industrial CO2 savings.

These are the plans

Electric furnaces are to be built in Völklingen and Dillingen by 2027, and a direct reduction plant is also to be built in Dillingen. Green hydrogen will be used in part during the planned start-up in five years, it said. Steel production is to be completely converted by 2045.
