IFEX 2011 in Chandigarh, India

Congress Opening

With an aim to speed up the growth of foundry industry in India, the 59th Indian foundry Congress was held from Feb.10-13. Mr. Satyanarayana, chairman of the organising committee of Institute of Indian Foundrymen and management consultant, made following announcement at a press conference:

"The Indian foundry industry is the second largest in the world, but China, which is number one in production of foundry goods, is around five times ahead us". foundry Planet research figured out that US-Americans and Russians are short behind. Satyanarayana also said, that the industry is currently short of casting production supply by 2-2.5 million tons! Listing the reasons for the short supply, Naresh Garg, president of Institute of Indian Foundrymen, said, "Shortage of skilled manpower and high cost of energy as compared to competing countries are the major factors affecting the foundry production. Also, less profit margins in the industry are contributing to traders taking to other industries". "The congress is being organised in Chandigarh after 46 years. The city has been chosen as a venue for hosting this congress in order to highlight, growth of the industry in the region, since Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh have registered a significant growth in the recent past," said Satyanarayana. He also said the industry has the capacity to generate employment at par with agriculture. Talking about the congress, Garg said over 1,300 registered delegates and 5,000 visitors are expected to participate in the event. foundry Planet counted 124 exhibitors from India and 45 international ones.15 Exhibitors made up the Cast India Expo 2011.

Major events of this congress included a buyer-seller meet, a CEO meet, Senior expert forum plenary sessions and 12 technical sessions with presentations of 50 authors. At present the automobile industry is the largest consumer of foundry products in India with a share of 32.4% in total consumption.
