CEMAFON High pressure die-casting and low pressure die-casting machine manufacturers hold their ground in difficult conditions

Reading time: min

The global exports of high pressure die-casting and low pressure die-casting machines reached a temporary global high in 2012 – although admittedly with only an insignificant increase of less than one per cent compared to 2011.

CEMAFON global market share 28 per cent in 2012
Whilst the exports of the six CEMAFON countries – Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom – were still following the global trend with an increase in deliveries by 30 per cent in 2011, they registered a drop of 21 per cent in 2012 in comparison to the previous year. At 261 million euros, exports were back at the pre-crisis level of 2008, but this was not enough to maintain the 34 per cent market share of that time. The global market share of the European high pressure die-cutting machine industry is currently 28 per cent.

Strong base in Europe
The CEMAFON member countries Italy, the United Kingdom and Germany are amongst the 10 largest suppliers of high pressure die-casting and low pressure diecasting machines in the world. Amongst them, Italy came top again in 2012, as the second biggest export nation in the world after Japan. In 2012, deliveries from France recorded an increase of more than a third (eleventh biggest export country).

Over the course of the past two years, the CEMAFON member countries have been able to almost double their exports to the EU28. Deliveries to the countries in Latin America also almost doubled. In the other regions, there was a downward trend in 2012.

Japan and the USA extend their activities
Japan and the USA, in particular, were able to increase their export ratios. Japanese exports increased by almost 20 per cent. It can be assumed that the Japanese machine manufacturers also benefitted from impetus from the financial policy. The Japanese manufacturers increased their exports to Asia (China, India, Thailand) and to the Americas (Brazil, Mexico, China). Foundry machine manufacturers from the USA were able to more than double their exports with outstanding growth rates of shipments to China, Canada and Oman (special effects).

Reflection of the current trend in machine construction
The trend in the world regions is currently reflected in the area of the construction of high pressure die-casting and gravity die-casting machines. There are three major manufacturing centres: Asia, Europe and America. Asia has been the largest manufacturing region in machine and plant construction since 2009. Europe accounts for almost one third of the global sales of machines, with Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and France as the main production locations. However, European foundry machine manufacturers are now also represented in Asia and other regions with extensive local production. After America's share declined for several successive years, it has stabilised again since 2010.

CEMAFON
CEMAFON (The European Foundry Equipment Suppliers Association) was established in 1972. Its members are the national European associations and thus all major manufacturers of foundry machinery and equipment, of smelting furnaces and products for the foundry industry in Europe. The association represents the economic and technical interests of its members throughout the world, provides information and creates a platform for the exchange of opinions on a European level. CEMAFON is the initiator and, together with the CAEF (The European Foundry Association), the organiser of the International Foundry Forum – 'where the CEOs meet'. The next IFF will take place on the 26th and 27th of September 2014 in Venice, Italy.
