Elkem Introduces New Video on Improving Treatment and Quality of Ductile Iron

Reading time: min

A new 17-minute video that helps ductile-iron foundries improve magnesium recoveries during the magnesium treatment of ductile iron has been introduced by Elkem Foundry Products, a leading producer of specialty alloys for iron foundries. The animated video recommends ladle modifications and alloying systems that recover more highly-reactive magnesium, allowing ductile-iron foundries to reduce the magnesium needed to form the desired nodular-graphite structure. Such a reduction significantly improves ductile-iron productivity and lowers costs.

According to the video, Elkem’s recommended practices can produce a quieter reaction and achieve from 10 to 35% higher magnesium recoveries than conventional ductile-iron practices, sharply reducing both fume and slag formation. The process can become so efficient and clean that foundries can sometimes treat, inoculate, and pour castings from the same ladle.

“By combining a more efficient alloying system with ladle modifications, Elkem can customize a practice that best fits individual ductile-iron operations,” said Chris Lisso, Elkem’s Sales Manager Americas. “We invite ductile-iron foundries to contact one of our global sales offices to schedule a video viewing and discuss how our computer program can improve their production.”

Elkem Foundry Products is a global producer of specialty nodularisers, inoculants, cover alloys, and pre-conditioners used in ductile-iron production and high-performance inoculants and pre-conditioners used in grey iron operations.
