Reading time: min

Grede Foundry in Berlin isn’t just going idle, it’s closing. The company released more details about its plans Friday, one week after giving plant employees the mandatory 60-day notice.

Grede plans to begin layoffs on September 1 and close the plant by the end of the year.

The company told the state Department of Workforce Development that 157 employees are affected – 133 hourly workers and 24 salaried.

The plant makes cast iron pieces for transportation and industry.

The Michigan-based Grede Holdings LLC says it closed three foundries in the U.S. in the last two years and is consolidating two foundries in Mexico. It says these changes, along with upgrading equipment in its remaining foundries, will lower costs and improve efficiency.

Grede eliminated 77 jobs last summer, reducing its workforce by a third. At that time the company cited a downturn in its business. The foundry produces sand castings for engine components, manifolds and suspension components, according to its web site.

The company says for now the plant remains open.
