MAGMA celebrates its 25th anniversary “Committed to Casting Excellence”

Reading time: min

June 27th in the year 1988 was a significant day: The establishment of MAGMA Gießereitechnologie, Gesellschaft für Gießereisimulations- und Regeltechnik mbH was the starting point for a success story that has now continued for 25 years.

The motivation of MAGMA’s initiators, Prof. Peter R. Sahm, Prof. Preben N. Hansen and Dr. Erwin Flender, in founding MAGMA was clear from the beginning: they wanted to make the new and intriguing technology of casting process simulation available to the foundry industry and its consumers. For the first time ever, MAGMASOFT® enabled foundrymen and designers to design and optimize gating, risering and casting processes in a predictive manner on the computer.

In 1988, the ability to model a casting virtually on-screen represented a revolution in the foundry industry, which did not immediately fire the enthusiasm of the foundry world. At that time, the acceptance and worldwide popularity that casting process simulation and MAGMASOFT® now enjoy after 25 years was not imaginable. However, it was clear from the very beginning that a continuous advancement of the program’s features to the benefit of the users would be a critical factor for success. Many of today’s comprehensive capabilities in the simulation of the processing and the properties of cast components far exceed the visions of the past.

Ongoing developments in MAGMASOFT® will offer our customers completely new opportunities for the future. The software will increasingly be used as a virtual experimental foundry and will directly support the set-up and optimization of robust production processes in the computer. This demonstrates why it is so important to continuously exchange experience and information with our customers at our regular user meetings, seminars, or through personal communication on the shop floor. Apart from technical issues, such discussions today often focus on how the full potential of MAGMASOFT® can be successfully integrated into a company’s daily work and can be applied for a maximum of economic benefit. MAGMA now also supports these efforts through the launch of MAGMAacademy. The MAGMAacademy not only provides product training, but is also an educational platform for all “consumers” of simulation results – whether designers, in the foundry or casting buyers. Today, 25 years after the foundation of MAGMA, MAGMASOFT® is more than an accepted engineering software. It is a methodology that can be used to achieve economic benefits in casting design, in toolmaking, in the foundry, through to casting applications. In this way, casting process simulation makes a significant contribution to the competitiveness of castings and to expanding the horizons of metal casting as a production technology.
