BASF and Austria's Voestalpine Stahl

develop non-toxic steel passivation product

BASF AG said it has joined forces with Austria's Voestalpine Stahl GmbH to develop a steel passivation compound for use in conversion coatings on galvanised steel.

Passivation improves corrosion resistance of unpainted metal surfaces.

The compound, which is chromium and fluoride free, has been launched following successful tests, said the company in a statement.

BASF declined to comment on production capacity and peak sales potential of the product.
