Taking advantage of the 10th anniversary of the 1st Carl Loper Symposium, held in Madison (Wisconsin, USA), a 2nd edition of this outstanding technical event will be held, this time in Europe. Organized by the IK4-AZTERLAN Metallurgy Research Centre (Spain), the American Foundry Society (USA), the World Foundry Organization and the Tabira Foundry Institute (Spain), the 2nd Carl Loper Symposium will take place in Bilbao, Spain, on September 30th and October 1st.

Presented as a two-full-days technical event, the symposium will include 4 invited Key Notes from first row industry professionals like J. FESCH, Chairman & CEO of SAKTHI PORTUGAL; E. ALBERTALLI, Expert Foundry Cast Iron of RENAULT; P. SAMUELSON, Senior Metallurgist of MAN ENERGY SOLUTIONS and Dr. S. DAWSON, President & CEO of SINTERCAST LTD. The symposium program will gather 40 contributed papers from leading academic and industrial communities.

In the words of the symposium organisers “the aim is to give the conference a sharp industrial orientation and to gather international foundry experts to share expert knowledge aligned with the future needs of the industry”. With that purpose, the conference will review the fundamentals of cast iron solidification and will highlight the latest research, technology and developments in metallurgy, production and applications of the material (spheroidal, lamellar and vermicular graphite cast iron, ADI and alloyed irons).

Registration for the symposium is already open in the following link: http://www.azterlan.es/en/carl-loper-symposium.html

Honoring Dr. Prof. Carl R. Loper Jr.
Professor of many professors and an internationally recognised expert on many areas of metallurgy, mainly ductile iron, Dr. Prof. Carl Loper was author to more that 500 technical and scientific publications, as well as to technical and scientific manuals. He also had many patents.

As a recognition to his extensive work, Dr. Prof. Loper received numerous awards and honors during his career. A member of the American Foundry Society (AFS), he received its highest honor, the Penton Gold Medal, for his contributions to research and education.

In May 2009 his former students and associates organised a symposium in his honor, the 1st Carl Loper Cast Iron Symposium, which he attended. Unfortunately, Dr. Prof. Carl Loper passed away in 2010 and this event was never repeated.

Because of the close collaboration between the IK4-AZTERLAN Metallurgy Research Centre and Mr. Loper, with the purpose of honoring his work and his figure, and with the support of the American Foundry Society, the World Foundry Organization and the Tabira Foundry Institute, this outstanding technical meeting is continued with the purpose of settling a 3 yearly international technical event of reference for industry and academia professionals.

About organising committee members

AZTERLAN Metallurgy Research Centre (SPAIN)
AZTERLAN is a private Technology Centre specialsed in metallurgy. It is focused in performing Research and Development activities linked to the transformation technologies of metallic materials (GDC, HPDC, HPVDC, Forging, Stamping, Lamination). It also develops advanced solutions and Industry 4.0 technologies applied to these industries and provides testing and analysis capacities that support metal-mechanical industry.

AZTERLAN promotes high added value research working lines with a strong technology transfer compromise, working in close cooperation with leading national and international scientific and technological agents.

American Foundry Society (USA)
The American Foundry Society (AFS) has a three-part mission of advocacy, education and innovation in metalcasting industry. It serves metalcasting industry producers, suppliers, and end users, including all metals and all processes. The society is considered an international organization consisting of 7,500 members across 48 countries, organized into more than 40 regional chapters and 34 student chapters in the United States, Canada and Mexico. AFS develops and funds research to address metalcasting technical needs.

World Foundry Organization
The World Foundry Organization is the recognised centre of strategic foundry knowledge, designed to develop, enhance and improve the production of metal castings; through the latest technical and sustainable industry practices. Through the involvement of the member associations, in 30 countries the WFO creates a network of technical knowledge and resource that is a vital tool to every foundry association, foundry and foundry worker throughout the world.

The WFO is a neutral body that represents the collective needs of the members on a global stage.

Tabira Foundry Institute (SPAIN)
The Tabira Foundry Institute is a meeting point for the development and exchange of knowledge within the metal-mechanical industry, mainly Foundry industry. Its aim is to support and give response to the challenges faced by the industry within these sectors. As a genuinely technical space it is participated by the whole value chain: foundries, suppliers, foundry consumers, technology centres and academia.
