The American Foundry Society (AFS) in conjunction with the Foundry Educational Foundation (FEF) honored the winners of the 2013 Student Technology Contest at the AFS Central Indiana Chapter meeting on April 16.
Derrick Myers, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from FEF and an AFS Merit Award for his undergraduate project, Breaking Up Coral-like Eutectic Silicon in Hypoeutectic Al-Si Alloys. Corey Vian, Purdue University, was named the 2013 graduate winner for his project, Bubble Formation and Motion during Solidification. Vian was awarded $1,500 from FEF and an AFS Merit Award.
Myers and Vian received their awards at the Central Indiana Chapter meeting and will have their papers published in the 2014 Winter issue of the International Journal of Metalcasting.
Honorable mentions in the contest include:
- Larry Glosch and Jonathan Giove, Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Mich., for their paper Shell V-Process.
- Dimitrios Kotsakis, Mohawk College, Ontario, Canada, for his paper Feasibility of Investment Cast RF (Radiofrequency) Load Housing with Integral Silicon Carbide (SiC) Absorber Element.
The Honorable Mention winners also will be published in the 2014 Winter issue of the International Journal of Metalcasting.
The AFS/FEF Student Technology Contest exists to encourage student participation and recognizes excellence in student research in the field of metalcasting technology. Projects must represent a student’s current or recent work in the area of metalcasting technology or molten metal processing. The contest highlights student and senior projects, graduate research and other work. Seven projects representing five universities were submitted this year.
