ArcelorMittal flat steel revamp plan a 'serious danger' for headcount - union

ArcelorMittal's plan to reorganise its flat steel operations in Europe represents 'a serious danger' in respect of staffing levels, said CFDT union representative Edouard Martin.

The company presented the plan, known as 'Bridge', to unions in mid-June, Martin told Agence France-Presse.

Martin earlier told La Tribune that the programme calls for the creation of a centralised organisation in Luxembourg that will take charge of strategy, purchasing, sales and pricing.

The plan would initially apply to Western Europe, starting in Jan 2008.

Martin told AFP the unions see 'a serious danger (in the plan), because each factory would have to manage by itself' in producing and generating margins with respect to prices set in advance by the Luxembourg entity.
