Brazil car market boomed 24% in October 2012 - Fiat close to 25%

Reading time: min

The Brazilian light vehicles market continues its chaotic trend, generated by tax breaks ending, used by the government to push up the market. In October sales were up 23.9% from last year. Year to date sales were up 7.3%.Fiat maintained momentum and the share was close to 25%.

October light passenger vehicles sales were 326.917, up 23.9%, as consumers rushed to purchase products before the end of the month when the Industrial profits tax (IPI) was ending. Year-to-date sales were 2.994.000, up 7.3%, with this year expected to break the new all-time record.

On the last day the Brazilian President, Dilma Rousseff confirmed that the government would not proceed with the removal of the tax breaks while the Finance Minister, Guido Mantega, confirmed that although Brazil expects this to be the final extension, he did not rule out the possibility of further extensions. The IPI tax breaks, introduced in May, had propped up car sales to record levels in August just before their planned expiry. On fears that industry sales would promptly nosedive, the breaks were extended into September and October but had an only limited impact, with sales in September declining 30% against August's highs.

From 2013, manufacturers and importers will be eligible for tax breaks if they commit to meet energy efficiency improvements of 12% by 2016, and incorporate the latest safety technology, such as anti-lock braking systems, into their builds. Manufacturers importing foreign-made components must carry out a significant proportion of a model's assembly in Brazil to be eligible.
