Cooperation for the future of die casting

Reading time: min

Bühler empowers their customer’s success, today and in the future, by continuously improving and innovating technological solutions. To meet the challenges of new developments, such as Industry 4.0, big data, new materials or predictive analytics, a close cooperation with leading institutions around the globe is crucial. Universities are conducting research on how to improve existing die casting processes as well as investigating new approaches and techniques - having direct access to such relevant research results should not be underestimated.

The University Kassel in Germany

On December 8, 2016 the foundry facilities at the University Kassel were officially inaugurated. The educational institution includes a Bühler Carat 140 system for research and training purposes. Prof. Dr. Martin Fehlbier’s approach is quite unique: Under his lead, the university established a close cooperation with various partners from the industry, bringing research and practice together to foster the development of the die casting industry.

Blue Ridge Community College in the US

Another institution that is newly working with a Bühler die casting cell is the SAMTEC facility (Southeastern Advanced Molding Technology Education Center) at the Blue Ridge Community College in North Carolina in the US. The Evolution 42 system underwent a complete overhaul at Bühler Brescia in Italy and includes many enhanced peripheral devices. Blue Ridge Community College is one of few institutions in North America offering a course in die casting. The Southeastern U.S. is seeing tremendous growth in OEM production plants along with their sub-suppliers including many new die casting companies. Therefore, well trained people with specific competence in high pressure die casting are in high demand to further boost the economic growth in this area. The Evolution 42 cell provides students a hands on environment for their academic training and ensures their state-of-the-art education.

King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) in Thailand

“The Light Alloy Research Group” in “The Division of Foundry and Metallurgical Engineering”, the “Department of Production Engineering”, KMUTT in collaboration with “Bühler (Thailand) Limited” recently held a Memorandum of Understanding Signing Ceremony to formalize KMUTT’s intention to install an Ecoline S 34 in their laboratory. The cell shall be used in the teaching curriculum. Additionally, access to the die casting cell will allow enhanced research, knowledge and understanding of industrial production applications in high pressure die casting.

Shaping the future of die casting together

Besides these recent examples for cooperation, Bühler is also working with other educational and research institutions in Germany, North America and India – ensuring that its customers can benefit from new research findings immediately, giving them a competitive edge today and into the future.
