ModelMaker D applied to MCA measurement arm - Versatile applications and a gain for all industries.


In December, DESCAM 3D Technologies GmbH will be celebrating its 10th anniversary of sales and services with ModelMaker.

With ModelMaker, a big variety of pieces can be scanned completely and without contact. The sensor is moved along the object being scanned and captures the surface. The point cloud will be optimised and triangulated then. After a short time, polygons in STL-format are available. On this data, tool-paths can be calculated, rapid prototyping parts can be manufactured or different simulations be done.

ModelMaker is always in use on a coordinate measurement arm, e.g. on the new MCA measurement arm from Metris, which measures the sensor position in the room. Due to lightweight components made of carbon fibre the arm is available with measurement diameters of 1,8 – 2,4 – 3,0 – 4,0 and 5,0 m and offers the measuring of bigger volumes than ever before.

Unique features of the MCA are the patented floating probe, the integrated electromagnetic brake and the on-site calibration capability.

Every MCA measurement arm is available in two variants. The industrial grade offers standard accuracy, e.g. for reverse engineering. The metrology grade provides superior accuracy for metrology applications. The MCA is available with six or seven axes. High accuracy is ensured by new encoder technology, algorithm, a unique calibration method and thermal compensations.

In which industries ModelMaker is applied?

ModelMaker has been used in foundries, drop forges, within the automotive and its suppliers, in the aerospace industries, in tool and mould making, art, medicine, handcraft as well as for training and research for many years.

In which departments ModelMaker is in use?

An investment in ModelMaker is worthwhile due to many different applications. ModelMaker supports the customer e.g. in stock receipt, inspection, design or construction. Nearly any object can be scanned with ModelMaker quick and productive. From scan data CAD data can be generated (surfacing), compared to reference data (inspection), and used for simulations (stiffness, temperature distribution, flow behaviour etc.), rapid prototyping or milling.


What else is included in the product range?

Next to ModelMaker, DESCAM is offering the half automated laser scanning system MobileScan3D, tactile measurement arms, software for data processing (surfacing and inspection), development and production of customised automated measurement and analysis systems in mass production.

According to the corporate philosophy, DESCAM is offering system solutions including laser scanner, measurement arm, notebook, software, training, support and all accessories and expendable items.

Another focus is on offering services, e.g. laser scanning, surfacing, inspection, training, repair, support and customized applications on-site or at the DESCAM office.

Services are a reasonable alternative if an investment is not possible due to the cost, if none of the employees can spare time for laser scanning, or if there are not enough applications within the company.

For customers, who are willing to make a bargain at the end of the year, DESCAM is offering for its 10th anniversary three special ModelMaker packages at a reduced price. The prices are only available for written orders until December 17th 2007.
