Dritev 2018: Innovative and interactive

Reading time: min

The international VDI congress "Dritev - Drivetrain for Vehicles" has once again positioned itself as the most important industry meeting place with around 1,500 visitors. From 27 to 28 June, the "Dritev 2018" showed what matters to today's propulsion developer.

With around 1,500 visitors and more than 100 international exhibitors, the Dritev was again the industry's most important meeting place and a unique networking platform. International experts presented their know-how in their lectures in the fields of research, pre-production and series development. The trade exhibition provided visitors with an intensive insight into the entire supply chain. Another highlight was the plenary presentation of the new chairman Mr Matthias Zink. In addition, there were interactive program items such as Tele-Voting, Round Tables or Dritev Lab.

Strategy concept "Mobility for Tomorrow"

For the first time, the VDI Transmission Congress 2018 met under its new title "Dritev" and, thus, considered the increasing internationalisation. In addition to the name, the new Congress Director Mr Matthias Zink, CEO of Schaeffler Automotive, was introduced. In his plenary lecture, Mr Zink explained Schaeffler's strategy concept entitled "Tomorrow's Mobility". The aim is to actively shape the automotive revolution based on the four key megatrends: climate change, urbanization, globalization and digitization. The goals of the globally active automotive and industrial supplier are clearly defined: "Eco-friendly drives", "urban mobility", "interurban mobility" and ”optimized energy chain".

According to Mr Zink, not only combustion engine powertrains but also the drive concepts of e-mobility have to be optimized for this. Innovative vehicle parts such as rolling bearing solutions are intended to improve urban mobility. In addition, Schaeffler, as a partner to the energy industry, supports the production of clean energy. The prognosis: a realistic redistribution of mobility by 2030 into mainly hybrid propulsion systems (40%), e-mobility (30%) and micro hybrids (30%).

Interactive - Tele-Voting

During a panel discussion, the visitors participated an interactive voting on how they think mobility will develop in the next decades. A clear majority (71%) see synthetic and CO2 neutral fuels as pioneers for the future of the classic combustion engine in the urban environment. Significantly less believe that then clean diesel fuels (20%) or natural gas (9%) will play a crucial role.

67 percent are convinced that the production of all-electric vehicles will predominate in Europe not until well into the 2030.

Disagreement among Dritev visitors about whether a poorly developed infrastructure (49%) or a lack of demand for electrified vehicles (44%) is the cause.

Nearly 78 percent of respondents see automated driving as a major turning point in urban mobility, rather than e-mobility (22%).

Experience technology - Dritev Lab and Round Tables A magnet for visitors was the Dritev Lab. Congress participants were able to study gear parts in detail here, gain an overview of the interaction of the various components or compare design and workmanship. The Round Tables discussed and networked. All participants were able to exchange ideas and opinions and get in touch with international experts.
