Elmira - Comments Being Taken For Proposed Foundry

Public comments are being received until April 24th by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality concerning EJ Americas llc’s plans to build and operate a gray and ductile iron foundry near Elmira.

Technically the foundry is to be located in Warner Township near the intersection of M-32 and US-131 and is expected to cost $135 million. EJ the 133 year old company once known as the East Jordan Iron Works plans to keep its headquarters in East Jordan and will operate its existing foundry until the new one opens.

Company officials say the new foundry is to be powered by electricity and use “smart technology” for its operations.

Owned by the Malpass family of East Jordan, which first opened the foundry in 1883, EJ now serves national and international markets, with affiliate companies in France, Ireland, Canada, and Austrialia. It’s best known for its manhole covers.

A preliminary determination has been made that the foundry as proposed will not violate any DEQ rules or National Ambient Aur Quality Standards.

An informational session and public hearing will be scheduled but only if requested in writing by April 24th. If the request is received by then it will be conducted at the Elmira Township Hall in Elmira.
