FANUC Robots in the Foundry Industry

Reading time: min

FANUC Robotics offers a broad range of different robot models which are suitable for use in a foundry situation. The environment within this industry demands robust and reliable industrial automation, FANUC Robotics provide robots that meet the required protection class suitable for this industry.  The new FANUC M-900iA/400L robot expands the list of heavy duty robots available from FANUC Robotics. With a reach of over 3.6 m and a maximum payload capacity of 400 kg the new model offers the opportunity to handle large work pieces often found in the Foundry Industry.

Therefore not surprisingly the M-900iA/400L robot is also available with SDLP (Severe Dust and Liquid Protection) option which ensures the robot is water and dustproof to IP67. In detail, the wrist and J3 arm achieves protection class IP 67 as standard with the rest of the robot body IP54 as standard. So far the M-900iA – series offers 5 models with a payload capacity from 200 kg up to 700 kg with a reach from 2.65 up to 3.625 m. The range of application is not limited to the Foundry Industry but can be applied to areas such as the Automotive Industry and palletizing applications.

As handling of large size work pieces is just one part of the requirements the Foundry Industry is faced with, FANUC Robotics also offers several models with smaller payloads. One year ago the LR Mate 200iC/5WP was introduced with a payload of 5 kg and a reach of 0.704 m. This model represents a fully IP67 water and dustproof robot for high pressure washing options. It is delivered with an aluminium body with an air purge option also available. Further models which are represented in the lower payload class of FANUC robots range for the Foundry Industry are the FANUC M-10iA with a payload of 10 kg and in a long-arm version M-10iA/6L with a payload of 6 kg and the M-20iA (M-20iA/10L) with a payload of 20 kg (10 kg). These models have an IP67 wrist and J3 arm and IP54 main body.

In the medium payload class one of the most popular FANUC robot series is the M-710iC. These models are available with a payload range of 50 or 70 kg. With an IP67 water and dustproof wrist and arm and optional highly durable epoxy paint they are fit to handle the challenges of a super harsh environment.
The R-2000iB series covers the range from 125 kg up to 250 kg and are available with IP67 wrist and J3 arm and IP 55 for the main body. It represents a family of industrial robots, including pedestal and rack mount versions with a variety of payloads and reaches. A slim arm and wrist assembly helps minimize interference with system equipment and allows the robot to operate in small workspaces.
The fields of applications in the Foundry Industry where FANUC robots could be integrated are varied. Some example applications the robots could be applied to are load or unload in die-casting machines or could be responsible for mold spraying activities. Further applications could be the cleaning and deburring of work pieces or the handling of sand molds.

One successful installation involves the palletizing of metal ingots at Recovco Affimet, a subsidiary of the Pechiney Group, which was integrated by Brochot, a FANUC Robotics partner, specialising in industrial equipment. The ingots were sorted by an M-410iB/450 robot, which picked 2, 3, or 5 ingots to build layers. Thanks to the large payload capability of FANUC robots and the flexibility of its programs, Affimet was able to manage payloads of 162 kg up to 243.5 kg with a cycle time of 8 sec. per ingot. Actually, Affimet has successfully tested cycle times of up to 2.4 sec. per ingot but wanted to keep an operational margin.
The intelligent FANUC Robotics options such as “Line Tracking” or “iRVision” help to minimize installation and operating costs and maximize production output. The FANUC iRVision system is a ready-to-use robotic vision package, available on all FANUC robots, requiring only a camera and cable – no additional processing hardware. It has a 2D robot guidance tool to accomplish part location, error proofing, and other operations that normally require special sensors or custom fixtures. For robotic vision processes that exceed the capability of 2D vision systems, FANUC Robotics also offers an integrated 3D vision system.
