Foundry of Excellence – Grunewald

Expertise in Low-Pressure Sand Casting, Toolmaking, and Mechanical Engineering.

Reading time: min

Grunewald has an extensive experience in low pressure sand casting, tool making and machine building. It is a family-owned business with 3 production sites in Germany. Grunewald provides design and engineering activities as well as manufacturing capabilities like casting, milling, assembly and qualification.

Grunewald is specialised in low pressure sand casting of alumnium parts such as body structures, chassis or engines. Different casting alloys of alumnium and iron can be melt and casted.

By use of FEM simulation modelling, structural mechanical and casting process simulations such as mold filling, solidification, residual stresses and shrinkage incl. distortion can be calculated.

Grunewald produces patterns out of varied materials for moulding the sand within a short timer. With two 3D sand printing machines (ExOne S-Max KHP), sand molds and cores are manufactured even faster.

H2O black wash is used for an optimal surface quality and also saving alumnium silicate.

Grunewald has a long experience and profound know-how in low pressure sand casting of highly integrated parts. Even large products can be casted with a wall thickness up to 2mm.

Due to the low-pressure casting principle, the mold filling by a differenciated casting system is ascending with a quiet laminar flow. The casting process and fluid shrinkage is controlled after pressure. That leads to a repeatable process.

Grunewald is offering a one-stop-solution. For alumnium cast alloys that are not self-hardening, efficient heat treatments are carried out to meet the technical specifications of our customers. By straightening, the casted parts achieve the perfect geometrical shape. With different NC-machines, milling activities of casted parts including measurement and qualification can be implemented.

The casting facility with state-of-the-art process technology in the molding and regeneration shop and a new energy-saving air conditioning concept leads to recirculation and heat recovery. The air is 100% cleaned and returned to the hall through a filtering process of dust and through a pipeline with exhaust grilles. The system is equipped with cartridges of dust class M with a workplace limit value greater than or equal to 0.1mg/m³. The air emitted is usually cleaner than the ambient air supplied.

Based on the thermal sand regeneration, 95% of the mold sand can be  reused.

Grunewald is certified according to

DIN EN ISO 50001

DIN EN ISO 14001
