GER - Aluminum industry welcomes quick government aid

Aluminum supply chains: holistic view necessary

Reading time: min

The aluminum industry cannot escape the dramatic development of German and European industrial activity. In an ad hoc survey by the Association of the Aluminum Industry (GDA), 80 percent of the companies surveyed stated that incoming orders and call-off numbers from the automotive industry had declined sharply and in some cases completely came to a standstill.

Production disruptions are already making themselves felt: 50 percent of those surveyed see logistics as a burden on their own production. 46 percent report a lack of incoming orders and around 44 percent state that production is hampered by increased sick leave. According to the survey, around half of those surveyed have already started short-time work or planned it at short notice.

The packaging sector is experiencing a special development, both for food and pharmaceutical products. 50 percent of companies report increasing orders and orders, the other half is looking at stable demand. “It is now crucial to maintain the supply chains in their entirety. Without the metal production, the production of semi-finished products, the recycling including the process scrap, these highly relevant chains no longer work, ”said Marius Baader, managing director of the GDA.

The GDA has formulated economic policy measures with other associations of the non-one (NE) metal industry (WV Metals, BDGuss, GDB) that take into account the peculiarities of the industry. “We very much welcome the rapid introduction of government aid programs. In addition, questions such as flexible regulations in the Working Hours Act, adjustments to deadlines in environmental and energy law and unimpeded freight transport in Europe are currently just as vital for our companies to survive, "said Marius Baader.
