GER - Saarstahl to build a EUR 150 million secondary metallurgy plant

Reading time: min

With a new plant for steel processing, which results in Völklingen, wants the Saar steel company in the increased demand for high quality steel and forged products needs.

In the EUR 150 million construction of the new secondary metallurgy of Saarstahl group is on schedule. That said Mr Patrick Naumann, head of structural engineering, in an interview with the newspaper Saarbrücken. After the foundation and concrete work is completed, currently produces a 60 meter high steel structure. As of November begins the construction of the roof and walls, the middle of next year, the new steel finishing and will become operational.

The building project comes from complex, especially because it takes place in a relatively small area: the cranes have only twelve feet maneuvering. The alloy also find shelter in the new building, an unusual place. The 5,000 tonnes storage material sits in about 45 feet above the future steel finishing plant one reason that the steel structure must be designed especially massive.

Saar steel reacts with the investment on the strong demand for high-quality steel. The crude steel in the secondary metallurgy are removed in a vacuum volatile gases such as hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon monoxide. Among other things, so the properties are improved forging the so-called steel billets, the steel is more elastic. Already set up such a Saarstahl secondary metallurgy. Originally from the 80's system has only a capacity of 70,000 tonnes per year.

Mr Andreas Heinen director of secondary metallurgy in Völklingen said that "The demand is much higher."

With the new facility will be a capacity to around 150,000 tonnes more than doubled. The impetus for the investment came primarily from customers in the auto industry, the more high quality forged products for example crankshafts inquire. The redevelopment also a rearrangement of the Saar steel area is connected: for example needed for the construction according to Naumann moved including the steel mill washroom as well as the central workshop for several million euros.
