With the plant in Kechnec, Slovakia, Handtmann is currently building the most modern foundry in Europe. "We are setting new standards in sustainability here," explains company CEO Thomas Handtmann. "For example, not only by increasing energy efficiency and reducing gas consumption and thus emissions, but also by halving the amount of hazardous substances used in production. In addition, the new plant will be 100 per cent process wastewater-free."

Focus on the environment

"We are proud that our efforts to make the new plant 'green' have now even been rewarded with an award," says a delighted Thomas Handtmann. Together with Polestar and Volkswagen AG, the Biberach-based company was nominated for the top three places in the "Operations" category by the expert jury in mid-April and has now been chosen as the winner in the final round.

The annual "Sustainability Award in Automotive" is presented to companies whose products, processes and initiatives have a holistic impact on the sustainability of the automotive industry. The award is aimed at manufacturers of passenger cars, light and heavy commercial vehicles, construction and agricultural machinery and off-highway vehicles as well as their suppliers and subcontractors from Europe. Applications can be submitted in one of the categories Drive Technology, Complete Vehicle and Operations & Supply Chain. The focus here is on the contribution to one or more aspects of sustainability for the environment, social affairs or control/management.
