The team at ABP Induction, one of the world's leading manufacturers of induction melting and heating systems, has once again succeeded in securing a large contract. This reinforces the Dortmund harbor site, with its current workforce of around 150 employees, as a competence center for induction technology in green steel production. The centerpiece of this large order for Zhongshou Special Steel Group, a Chinese steel producer, is a rolling mill plant following the Arvedi-ESP (Endless Strip Production) principle, provided by ABP's parent company, Primetals Technologies, based in Linz, Austria. A key aspect of this order is the complete substitution of all gas-heated heating systems with electrically operated induction systems for intermediate heating of a steel strip, marking a significant step toward green steel production. The TSH-type induction systems, specifically developed and manufactured by ABP in Dortmund for this application, primarily consist of large water-cooled copper coils and powerful IGBT converters with connection capacities between 45 and 60 MVA. In multiple coil modules, an endless steel strip with a width of 1,600 mm is brought to a continuous target temperature of around 1,200°C using an inductive transverse field. This enables the subsequent rolling process to produce thin sheet metal with a thickness of 0.7 mm.
