HOT IRON - THE BLAST OVEN AT THYSSENKRUPP MUST STAY ON

Iron production continues despite Corona

As we have heard, there have also been lay-offs at Thyssenkrupp due to Corona since early April, with large parts of the administration work from home. But there are areas where almost everything continues to run as it did before the crisis.

Raw iron is made 24/7 at Thyssenkrupp Steel in Duisburg. At the moment, production has been reduced to around 4,000 tons a day, because the automotive industry in Europe is still at a standstill. The approximately 400 workers continue their shifts. Why? Because you cannot switch a blast furnace on and off like a household oven, and you cannot operate it from home.

Nevertheless, the operating processes in the control center were adjusted. The employees keep a minimum distance of 1.50 meters from one another, and all meetings take place via conference call. Though it is not a big adjustment for the company's employees - watching out for your fellow worker is not a new concept for the Thyssenkrupp workers.
