Hyundai Steel opens low pollution storage system

Reading time: min

Korea Herald reported that Hyundai Steel had initiated an environment friendly system that unloads, conveys and stores raw materials for steel manufacturing in Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province.

Hyundai Steel officials said that the so called tightly closed iron raw material processing system enables the steelmaker to unload iron ore and coal from ships quickly, transport them on conveyer belts and store them in airtight domes and linear storage buildings. The process, which Hyundai says is the world's first, prevents scattering of dust and limits air pollution, which are big headaches for steelmakers.

Mr Chung Mong koo chairman of Hyundai Kia Automotive Group said that "Hyundai Steel's integrated mill is equipped with the world's first dome-shaped storage facilities and it will become an excellent role model as 'an eco-friendly integrated mill. We have four months left to complete the first blast furnace in January 2010. When we complete the second blast furnace in April, 2011, we will have an annual capacity of 8 million tons of crude steel." The Hyundai Kia Automotive Group aims to boost synergy effects among affiliates by creating a circular production and recycling link between steel manufacturing, steel processing and car making.
