Reading time: min

Kolkata was host of the 61st Indian Foundry Congress, organised by The Institute of Indian Foundrymen, from Jan 27 to 29, with an aim of helping East India to forge a strong industry in metal casting.

Globally, India is ranked  third in casting production, but its share in the global market is below 2 % and foundrymen want to build 'Brand India' by offering the right product mix, quality and price in order to reach out to the world, the organisers said.
The congregation at Kolkata will help Eastern India take up the challenge to set up new foundries and ensure the industry emerges strong in India again, they said.

The conference had two concurrent events - IFEX 2013 and Cast India Expo. The 61st IFC was inaugurated by West Bengal Industries and IT Minister Partha Chatterjee and Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Saugata Roy along with Managing Director - Mjunction Services Viresh Oberoi.

The Indian foundry industry produces 9.9 million MT cast components as per various specifications - which is the third largest globally according to the 46th World Casting Census-2011 (marginally behind USA), and the established revenue is 12.5 bn USD, exports stand at 2 bn USD, the organisers emphazised.
The industry also provides employment to 2 million people directly and indirectly. The foundry sector has the vital role of supporting the manufacturing sector, and the industry is mainly driven by domestic demand.

The government tentatively plans to invest 1 trillion USD in the 12th Plan in Infrastructure and Power, which will be a major boost for the sector.

During the conference there  was the opportunity to meet buyers of castings from various fields and different countries, as well as the opportunity to meet foundry owners from all over India, and budding entrepreneurs of the East who are forging ahead to bring about the foundry revolution.
and it was a platform for interaction with international delegates and learning their technology.

IFEX 2013 and Cast India Expo was held at Salt Lake Stadium with  200 stalls in two tents by companies from India and abroad, showcasing their technologies and products, as well as delegates from China, Germany, Italy and Japan, Uk and USA which are major hubs of the foundry industry.

Even , if we don`t know the exact number of visitors we have met some exhibitors, who were not really satisfied with the amount and quality of visitors this year, because they missed numerous delegations from the South and Western Chapter. In summery, it was anyway good to stay in Kolkata to view the

ambitious attempts of The Indian Casting Industry to build up Brand India and congratulation to the organizers for the great hospitality and a successful social event program.
