Magnesium Fire at George Fischer in Altenmarkt Austria: Extraction System Explodes

Up to 30 fire departments and 300 men were called to into action at factory of the automobile manufacturer, George Fischer in Altenmarkt, Austria, after a fire broke out when an extraction system exploded.

The State criminal investigation in Steirmark Austria determined that magnesium powder processed in the production hall became inflamed causing the explosion. Two workers were injured and three buildings affected but according to the company, production is back up to 100%.

Georg Fischer GmbH Altenmarkterstrasse produces castings of aluminum and magnesium die casting for the automotive industry. The aluminum components include oil pans and cylinder head covers. From magnesium components, other parts are manufactured such as door panels and consoles. According to the company website, the auto part maker employs about 600 people is part of the international Swiss GF Automotive AG.
