AlCircle and local media report that Montenegrin company Uniprom has shut down the last 12 electrolysis cells at its Podgorica aluminium plant (KAP), ending aluminium production at the plant after 52 years.

However, the facilities for the production of aluminium logs and alloys continue to operate, with the metal being imported for production purposes. Sources reported that about 50 workers had become unemployed as a result of the plant's closure.

Uniprom staff said, "The government has illegally taken carbon credits away from Uniprom and ceded them to the EPCG, in contravention of an EU directive. The European Energy Community has already initiated proceedings and the damages amount to tens of millions of euros. After the EU report arrives, we will continue with further activities. Production at KAP's other factories will not be interrupted."

In December 2021, most of the electrolysis cells were shut down because EPCG (power utility) refused to supply power to the plant at the previous price of 44 euros ($48) per MWh as prices on the power exchanges had risen.

In a drastic turn of events, KAP had to go through bankruptcy proceedings in 2013 and was sold by the Montenegrin government in 2014. Since then, Uniprom has made the unit produce 20 per cent of the Balkan state's total aluminium exports.
