Rays of recovery - TATA Motors sales soar 14pct in August

TATA Motors posted a 14.24% jump in its total sales during August at 49,810 units as compared with 43,600 units the same month in 2008. The homegrown firm's total passenger vehicles sales in the domestic market grew by 11.33% at 17,364 units last month, against 15,597 units in the same month last year. However, its exports in August plummeted by 43.76% at 2,684 units as compared with 4,772 units in the same month last year.

TATA Motors in a statement said that its Indica range reported sales of 9,598 units up by 24% over August 2008. The Indigo family however recorded sales of 2,656 units a fall of 41% over the same month last year. Sumo and Safari accounted for sales of 2,609 units a decline of 22% as compared with August last year.

In the commercial vehicles segment, sales in August in the domestic market stood at 29,762 units as compared with 23,231 units sold in the same month last year, up 28.11 per cent. Light commercial vehicles sales during the month were at 18,644 units up 42% while medium and heavy commercial vehicle sales stood at 11,118 units, a jump of 10% compared with August 2008.

Cumulative sales of passenger vehicles in the domestic market in the first five months of this fiscal were down by 1.17% at 80,392 units against 81,343 units in the year-ago period. Commercial vehicles cumulative sales in the domestic market for the fiscal were 130,226 units a jump of 11% over the corresponding period in the last financial year.
