Recently, a major AIF-research project in collaboration with the Bergakademie Freiberg, the University Siegen as well as the companies Ohm & Häner and Heinrich Wagner Sinto was granted.

Within the framework of the central innovation programme for small and medium-sized enterprises (ZIM) the companies Heinrich Wagner Sinto Maschinenfabrik GmbH (HWS), Bad Laasphe, and Ohm & Häner Metallwerk GmbH, Olpe, have applied for a cooperative project at the AiF in Berlin in collaboration with the Institute for Mechanical Engineering of the Bergakademie Freiberg, professor Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Bast, and the Department of Information Systems of the University Siegen, professor Dr.-Ing. Manfred Grauer.

The project was now granted with a project volume of approx. one million Euro under the title „Optimization of foundry production processes by utilization of knowledge-based control circuits on the basis of real-time process data“. The target of the project is to continuously evaluate the quality of green sand moulds directly during the moulding process by the integration of innovative sensor technology into the new HWS moulding plant at the company Ohm & Häner at the plant in Drolshagen. Furthermore, the subjective visual inspection shall be replaced by the utilization of a camera-based visual inspection. On this basis a knowledge-based control system will be set up which shall contribute to the direct quality improvement of the casting moulds and thereby to the conservation of material resources and shortening of cycle times. First results of the project will be presented during the foundry trade fair „GIFA 2011“ in June 2011 in Düsseldorf.
