Taiwanese scrap imports in May dip by 54pct YoY

According to Taiwanese customs statistic made available in Tokyo, Taiwan's ferrous scrap imports totaled 338,000 tonnes in May 2009, down by 54.2% YoY, in which supplies from the USA decreased by 37.4% YoY to 158,000 tonnes, while those from Japan increased by a factor of 17.3% YoY to 84,000 tons. In January to May 2009 period, Taiwan's ferrous scrap imports totaled 1,144,000 tonnes, down by 59.6% YoY.

In the breakdown by main sources, the USA ranked first at 544,000 tonnes, down by 59.3% YoY, Japan second at 185,000 tonnes, up by 72% YoY, South Africa third at 85,000 tonnes, up by 205% YoY, the Netherlands fourth at 55,000 tonnes, down by 66% YoY and Hong Kong fifth at 51,000 tonnes, down 83.1% YoY.
