On the premises of the TRIMET aluminum smelter in the port of Hamburg, the municipal energy supplier Hamburg Energie has put three wind turbines into operation. Hamburg’s First Mayor, Olaf Scholz, called the facility a further beacon for Hamburg, Germany’s wind capital: “The three large wind turbines in front of an impressive harbor backdrop clearly show that commercial premises, more than ever before, can contribute to the production of energy. This project, the installation of a wind farm in the heavily-used commercial section of the port, is unique in Germany.”
With an overall height of 199 meters, the turbines are one of the largest wind power systems in Hamburg, producing a total power output of 28 million kilowatt hours per year. This is equivalent to the electricity demand of about 10,000 households.
“For me, Hamburg is the best model region for the energy transition,” said Dr. Martin Iffert, CEO of TRIMET Aluminum SE. “A large city, trade, industry, classic power plants and renewable energies are working hand-in-hand for the economic future of this location. And here in Finkenwerder, we are now showing quite specifically that renewable energy and industry can complement one another, thereby serving as a model.”
