Tradition meets modernity

In the production of cask bodies for spent fuel elements, Siempelkamp uses iPads. The tablet is used for quality recordings within the production processes.

The robust industry iPad has been tested by the Siempelkamp IT specialists under the most adverse environmental conditions found to be operational in the foundry. A high-performance WLAN with a range over several production halls ensures trouble-free processes. The quality monitoring module Babtec existing for three years already serves as the application base, by which inspection instructions can be illustrated in pictures for a better understanding.

In repeated process audits, characteristics of the production processes were defined, which require particular attention due to increased susceptibility. This was done in close collaboration between quality and operation management, master craftsmen and workers of the Giesserei. The outcome was an audit plan with illustrations of individual process steps, broadened by potential fault catalogs. Thereby, a complete quality documentation of each production process takes place now. By exchanging the initial “quality slip” with the iPad, Siempelkamp now has the possibility to immediately link digital images and process disturbances.

The general advantages of this process is obvious: quick central overview, avoidance of production errors, reduction in postprocessing costs, error analysis for a faster maintenance, process transparency for exact quality graduation and finally zero-defect production with a complete quality certificate for the customer. The generated know-how is now also being transferred step by step to the production of further cast component groups.
