USA - Ford to add 1,000 jobs to Ontario plant

Ford Motor Co., the second biggest automaker in the U.S., will add more than 1,000 jobs at its plant in Oakville, Ontario, to build the company’s 2015 Edge utility vehicle.

The round of hiring will bring total employment at the plant to more than 4,000 by the end of the year, Ford said today in a statement.

Profit at Ford, and U.S. peers General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC, has been boosted by resurgent demand from consumers attracted by new models and low financing costs as the U.S. economy rebounds. The automaker said last week it hired more than 14,000 U.S. workers since 2011 and is adding 1,200 more jobs at its Kansas City assembly plant.

“New jobs at Oakville Assembly will strengthen our investment in Canada and increase our capabilities as we gear up for one of the most anticipated launches at Ford,” Joe Hinrichs, president of the Americas for Dearborn, Michigan-based Ford, said in the statement.

The automaker last year announced a C$700 million ($624 million) investment in the Oakville plant to expand manufacturing capability. Ford will also increase spending on Canadian-made auto parts by C$200 million a year, according to today’s statement.
