USA - Lufkin Industries lays off 77 at foundry

Lufkin Industries continued its resizing with the layoffs of 77 foundry employees Friday, a company spokesman said Monday. The workforce reduction included salaried and hourly employees. "This is a continuation in response to our previous layoffs," said Paul Perez, vice president. "At our foundry a large part of this work is in support of our oil field division." In early March the company laid off 173 oil field workers, following a round of 53 laid off at the same division in January. The foundry and oil field divisions were reducing their business and labor to reflect the current level of business they have, Perez said. "We just never anticipate this.
