A Magna International Inc. subsidiary and Durr Systems Inc. both have been approved for Michigan state incentives for new operations planned in suburban Detroit.

The Magna unit -- Marada Industries Inc., dba Cosma Body Assembly Michigan -- plans to construct a $56.1 million automotive underbody component plant in Lyon Township, Mich., about 40 miles west of Detroit.

The project calls for construction of a 150,000-square-foot plant on 32 acres following a new contract win from an undisclosed automaker.

The project, supported by a $1.6 million performance-based grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund, is expected to create 250 jobs, the Michigan Economic Development Corp. said in a press release on Tuesday.

Magna declined to disclose timing of the construction project or comment beyond the MEDC release.

Lyon Township will also support the project with a property tax abatement, the MEDC said.

Separately, the Michigan Strategic Fund board approved a $4.9 million local and school tax capture toward a $40 million consolidation project by Durr Systems Inc. in Southfield.

Durr, which supplies paint shops to auto assembly plants, is consolidating its three Michigan locations -- in Auburn Hills, Plymouth Township and Wixom -- into one research, engineering and equipment testing facility. The existing 90,000 square feet of office space has been gutted to make way for renovations.

The project is expected to retain 485 jobs in the state. Southfield also approved a 10-year incentive package for the project with an estimated savings of $700,000.
