USA - OSHA scrutiny likely after Delaware foundry explosion injures 5

Reading time: min

Five people are recovering after an industrial accident at a Delaware foundry. Molten iron exploded at the Liberty Casting plant on Liberty Road in Delaware.

The blast caused small fires inside the plant, which employees quickly extinguished. Five people were burned, at least two of them seriously, according to an employee who called 911.

"I got multiple injuries," the caller told dispatchers. "I got multiple guys that are burned up."

One man was released from Grady Memorial Hospital in Delaware. Four others were taken to OSU's Wexner Medical Center. Their conditions are unknown.

Delaware firefighters are investigating. They said the Occupational Safety and Health Administration will be notified and will likely investigate as well.

OSHA has penalized Liberty Casting in the past, finding two violations in 2015 that it classified as "serious." The company was fined $12,600, but that fine was cut in half in a settlement.

The company did not return calls for comment today.
