Marco Gonzalez, Waupaca Foundry's Energy Manager, was named Midwest Energy Manager of the Year by the Association of Energy Engineers. The award was presented at the regional awards ceremony in September. The organization recognizes individuals for their outstanding contributions to promoting energy management practices and principles.

Gonzalez leads the company's energy and decarbonization efforts across its plants nationwide. Waupaca Foundry has been on the path to net-zero since 2001, achieving key sustainability milestones, including:

- A 21% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 energy intensity since 2010
- Joining the U.S. Better Climate Challenge in 2022
- Participating in the U.S. Better Buildings Low Carbon Pilot Program in 2021
- Earning ISO 50001 Energy Management certification for its gray iron foundry in 2016
- Issuing its first CDP report in 2015 as the first U.S. metal casting company to do so
- Developing a formal energy plan and roadmap in 2014
- Joining the U.S. Department of Energy's “Better Buildings, Better Plants Save Energy Now” program in 2009

“Foundries are energy-intensive operations, and we are responsible for meeting our sustainability goals for both our team and customers,” said Mike Nikolai, President, COO, and CEO of Waupaca Foundry. “Under Marco's leadership, we have reduced our energy needs by 22% since 2009, which would not have been possible without his dedication to this goal."

"I am deeply honored and grateful for this award," said Gonzalez. "This recognition motivates me to continue striving for excellence on our path to increasing energy efficiency and reducing our carbon footprint."

Waupaca Foundry has integrated sustainable business practices into its operations to enhance efficiency, offset costs, and meet regulatory and stakeholder demands. Along with its CO2 and energy reduction efforts, the company is committed to environmental performance, having achieved the following:

- Recycling 80% of foundry byproducts (sand) used
- Reducing water usage by 70%
- Operating air pollution control systems in all plants that meet the "best available" standards as recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and state regulatory bodies
