China - SMS Meer opens new site in Shanghai

SMS Meer has invested EUR 22 million in a new production site in Shanghai. The site was officially opened on October 28th at a ceremony attended by 250 guests.

The Shanghai site will manufacture complete machines for the Chinese market and components for customers around the world. With its combination of European design and manufacturing capacity in China, SMS is pursuing a distinctive strategy within the industry.

Mr Joachim Schönbeck president & CEO of SMS Meer said “The outstanding quality of our plants and machines is what differentiates us in the market, and we are determined to maintain and increase this competitive advantage. The new Shanghai site will enhance the flexibility of our manufacturing operations.”

He said that SMS Meer Engineering China Ltd employs 250 people. The new site also gives Chinese customers direct access to the complete SMS Meer range of services, from installation and commissioning to maintenance and modernization.

Mr Schönbeck said “Our highly qualified employees guarantee optimal customer communication in Chinese language, while also working closely together with their colleagues in Germany so our customers receive the full benefit of all SMS Meer’s expertise, combined with quick on-site support.”

SMS Meer’s engineering and design operations will continue to be based in Europe.
