50th International Foundry Conference Portorož 2010

SLOVENIAN FOUNDRYMEN'S SOCIETY organizes its primary and already traditional international foundry conferences in Portorož that are celebrating this year their jubilee – 50th Conference. This will be held from September 8th to 10th in the Congress Centre of Hotel Slovenia in Portorož. Conference represents one of the biggest and internationally established founders’ events in this part of Europe.

Slovenian Foundrymen’s Society (further: Society) is association of foundry companies and deliverers to foundry industry, of foundry and other experts that have interest for foundry profession and research & development achievements in the field of founding. Society was established in year 1953. It has good contacts with CAEF – Association of European Foundries, it is member of WFO – World Foundry Organization, it takes part in MEGI – Middle European Foundry Initiative. Also companies from abroad that are related to founding are members of the Society. Basic goal of Society is professional education with organizing meetings, seminars, lectures and professional tours, next to publishing central Sllovenian professional foundry magazine – Livarski vestnik - with four issues per year. Library of the Society contains a number of foreign professional magazines, being available to all members of the Society. There are published proceedings of conferences and seminars. Foundrymen from majority of Slovenian foundries and a great number of foreign professionals attend foundry conferences. It can be said that there are participants from majority of European countries and countries of former Yugoslavia. They are researchers, lecturers from universities and institutes, and foundry research & development professionals from companies, next to people preparing exhibitions that accompany conferences.

Program of this year Foundry Conference that can be seen at the Society website: www.drustvo-livarjev.si shows that lectures are grouped in such a way that general situation in the field of founding is reviewed, including all the sections. Lectures are presented by distinguished domestic lecturers and researchers from abroad. Plenary lectures will present state of engineering and view on operation of foundries in conditions of recession next to look at opportunities of foundry industry in manufacturing hybrid and electrical vehicles. In connection with those lectures a presentation of position of European die-casting industry in conditions of globalization will be given next to lecture on state of Slovenian founding in the last two years that were economically especially difficult. Plenary session will be closed with presentation of development of foundry materials and technologies, exhibiting development of highly applicable aluminium alloys, and a lecture on high-pressure die casting.

Lectures from the field of cast irons and their foundry technologies will present development of ductile cast iron, simulations and manufacturing technologies, numerical simulation of core making, mastering the manufacturing costs by reconditioning sand mixtures and also with reducing problems due to hot tears on castings. The second part of this session will begin with presentation of characterization of microstructures of hardened and tempered and modified cast irons with low carbon equivalent, presentation of development of flaskless moulding process and advanced moulding technology. Occurrence of defects on castings and their identification under the casting surface next to their prevention will be topics interesting to participants while mathematical modelling of solidification processes and computer-aided analyses of microstructures are becoming general topics nowadays.

Lectures from the field of non-ferrous alloys are always chosen in such a way that they present momentary state of engineering. Lectures are very diversified, from presentation of influence of rotation speed and holding time at certain casting technique, and influence of ceramic self-setting constituents on mechanical properties of composites to calibration of measuring equipment. Also dental alloys will be mentioned. Interesting will be lectures on energy consumption and cost reduction. In that group of lectures, there will be also presentations: quantitative analysis of micrographs as help for phase identifications in cast alloys, influence of microstructural characteristics on mechanical properties of alloys, numerical simulation of investment casting, detection and prevention of casting defects, and an interesting lecture that will presents answers to questions of pressure-die casters about demands of car industry for higher integration of components and higher quality of components.

Posters session consists of various contributions, from cast irons to cast non-ferrous alloys, with presentation of technologies, determination of influence of process parameters, influence of modification on shrinkage of cast alloys, solidification of various cast alloys and its influence on mechanical properties, as well as experimental and numerical analyses of stresses and strains in die-cast castings.
