2009 made it remarkable on China and the world’s aluminium calendar. Despite the winter-like economics climate in most countries, the whole year round, aluminium consumption in China reached 14.21 million tons, an 11% rise from year 2008, which provided strong support to the global aluminium market. A yearly 41.5% rise in primary aluminium price is recorded as of December 2009 (stock price on December 25, 2009 is 16,145 RMB/ton, compared to the price on December 25, 2008, which was11,410 RMB/ton). With clear signs showing that the country has made its way out of the crisis, China is now becoming the headspring of the momentum for recovery. With the strong sustaining of several aluminium consuming industries like infrastructure, automotive and real estate, China aluminium industry has turned around and is now continuing its way on the up under favourable policies and measures taken by the Chinese government to boost economics. As widely estimated, the global aluminium demand will remain led by the growing China market and stay stably increasing in 2010.

Precisely at this point of time, Shanghai, as the host of WORLD EXPO 2010 - the global celebration with an expected 70 million visitors arriving in the city between May till October, makes the well facilitated Shanghai New International Expo Centre between June 9 to 11 a perfect location and timing for anther fabulous ALUMINIUM CHINA.

ALUMINIUM CHINA is an annual industry event which became Asia’s leading aluminium event by drawing hundreds of top industry companies and thousands of professionals from over 90 countries to Shanghai, facilitating new partnerships, and business deals. Last year, unlike the downward trend experienced by many industry players, ALUMINIUM CHINA 2009 as the year’s largest aluminium industry gathering worldwide, managed to achieve overwhelmingly positive results amidst the period of crisis. The event realised a 30% growth in terms of visitor number (8,786 visitors and buyers in 2009, and 6,744 in 2008), a peak one among the past 5 editions and another record high on-site rebooking rate of nearly 51%. With questions on how the market feels and what new highlights the 2010 event will come up with, we’ve interviewed Mr. Edwin Tan, Vice President of Projects & Business Development of the organiser - Reed Exhibitions Greater China, and his ALUMINIUM CHINA event team for some insights.

“The success of this event rides on the China’s explosive economic growth in the past and even 2009 was not an exception. Many of our exhibitors were affected by the recession and facing with real issues of fiercer competition and drop in demand. But the return they received through participation at ALUMINIUM CHINA proved the event as a most cost effective way of creating direct contacts which generates new business opportunities and sales leads, while in a macro way, China remained as the most dynamic market amongst globe wide difficulties. Seeing clear signs that the recovery is around the corner and China remains leading the trend, we firmly believe that the ALUMINIUM CHINA 2010 will become a bigger and more powerful edition ever.”

With over 80% of the reserved space sold 5 months before the start of the show and especially in hall W5 where most international exhibitors locate, that 95% of the exhibiting area is booked up and still many more companies on the waiting list, Reed exhibitions is anticipating yet another record breaking event that will be participated by over 10,000 visiting professionals seeking to network with the providers and a better selection of quality products, special offers and partnerships. As the organiser of the global portfolio of ALUMINIUM events in Essen, Dubai, Mumbai and Shanghai, Reed Exhibitions is very confident in the future prospects of the industry. “The still booming infrastructure, building and transportation industries ensure China’s steady demand of aluminium products and this drives the aluminium industry on the track. Associated with the global economics recovery, the overseas demand will also pick up. The ones who catch the first opportunities in this diversified market will be stronger, more competitive and more connected to the local and international markets than ever before.”

“The country’s top aluminium semis producers and key exhibitors of the show are launching brand new campaigns and products to stay tuned for the positive industry atmosphere.”

The event’s biggest stand holder again this year - Aluminium Corporation of China has been seeking long term alumina deal to re-strength pricing resistance and its rolling branches in Southwest and Northeast China have successfully provided quality thick plate for the China C919 Big Plane Campaign. Mr. Tan continued to share some latest news from exhibitors who are regional leaders in China. The Aluminium Industry Park in Longkou, Shandong Province, headed by Nanshan Aluminium and Conglin Aluminium, has now become the base for light aluminium alloy production. The aluminium extrusion base in Dali, Guangdong Province has launched a thorough campaign to improve sustainability by implementing more energy saving and emission reduction. Jiangxi Province and Chongqing Municipal Government are introducing further investment to develop the region’s aluminium fabrication capacity. While in the equipment and technology aspect, the cold aluminium strip-foil mill manufactured by Shanghai Tianzhong Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd. has been in operation to produce foil with dimension of 0.33 mm thick and 2000 mm wide, which proved to be advanced even internationally.

Specially, ALUMINIUM CHINA 2010 will for the first time welcome Qatar Aluminum Limited (Qatalum), a joint venture by Qatar Petroleum and Hydro, for its debut in China and a press conference on-site.

As now China has become the heart of the world’s aluminium production and consumption, the global aluminium community is now looking to the China for new opportunities and new ways of doing business, working out special deals and partnerships with unprecedented selection of products and technology, and generally networking with each other, with WORLD EXPO 2010 running in parallel.
