Cesare Frigo, Managing Director of the Italian company Space Srl, passed away peacefully on Thursday 11th June, in the Hospice di Circolo, Busto Arsizio, Italy, after a short but sustained battle with cancer.

Cesare and his company are internationally known for innovative  green sand preparation and sand cooling equipment, throughout the foundry world where he was often referred to as the “green sand guru”.

After finishing school in 1954, he won a scholarship to the prestigious Naval Academy at Livorno, where he studied marine engineering, and passed out in 1955 as an engineering lieutenant in the Italian navy.

As engineering officer on a naval submarine, he found himself in port at Philadelphia USA, where he met the vice president of a major American tanker shipping line, who offered him a job as a chief on one of their ships. After buying out his commission, he joined the line and within three years was engineering superintendent of the entire fleet.

During this period, he became fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese. When he returned to Italy in 1963 to marry, he joined his father-in- law’s company, which supplied minerals and ingot to the foundry industry.

In 1979 he and his brother Spartaco, started the company Space, manufacturing a range of conveyors, elevators, screens and supplying Polish Centrozap greensand mixers. The big breakthrough to international markets came in 1983 with the “PGF” computerised moisture controller, built around software on board a Mackintosh computer. Since then, thanks to the technical ingenuity of Caesar with his team, many innovations have succeeded in the production of Space.

This brought the name Space to the attention of the world’s foundries, and the success of the business continues to this day.

Cesare is survived by his brother Spartaco, always in charge as CEO of the Company, his wife Liliana and his two daughters, Nadia and Daniela, the latter of which now steps in as company Managing Director.

Noted for his larger than life exuberance and wit, he will be missed by friends and clients worldwide.
