SinoCast Daily Business reported that Chinese steelmakers have now been in the spotlight for they have reportedly declined to participate in the global emission reduction plan proposed by the World Steel Association.
People in the know said although Chinese steelmakers have not taken part in the plan, they have been reducing the emission at their own pace.
As a matter of fact, the World Steel Association came up with the plan in 2007. At that time, Mr Zhang Xiaogang general manager of Anshan Iron & Steel Group Corporation based in Liaoning, northeast China told journalists that large Chinese steel mills would support the plan and contribute to the reduction of carbon dioxide.
But the general manager worried that most small steel plants would not be persuaded easily because equipment and technological problems would result in the emission of more carbon dioxide.
Now, Mr Zhang Xiaogang has become chairman of the World Steel Association. However the plan has not gone well in the latest four years. Some reports said that if Chinese steelmakers became part of the plan, some technological data would possibly be revealed which is why they have not wanted to join the plan.
A source from Baosteel Group Corporation, the bellwether in China iron and steel industry disclosed that they have been reducing the emission in accordance with state standards but it was not necessary for Chinese steel mills to make public their emission of cargo dioxide.
An insider from Wuhan Iron and Steel Corp a leading steelmaker located in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, thought that it was enough for Chinese steelmakers to reduce the emission in accordance with state standards and that it was meaningless whether to participate in the international plan or not.
China will establish its own carbon emission measurement system, said a deputy director of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is part of the country efforts to assess domestic greenhouse gas emission more accurately and enhance its say in climate change and carbon emission reduction in international community.
