FedNor grant helps bring jobs to area

MCDOUGALL TWP. – Full-time year-rounds jobs are coming within a couple years, thanks in part to a government grant.

Tiffany Metal-Casting Ltd. plans to build a manufacturing plant and a fabrication facility at the Parry Sound Area Industrial Park after land is opened up and serviced there.

On Tuesday Parry Sound-Muskoka MP Tony Clement, on behalf of the minister responsible for FedNor, announced the government agency was contributing $490,050 toward upgrading Helen Crawford Drive and extending sewer and water services along the road.

The entire project is budgeted at $1,089,000. The park board is optimistic that the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund will match FedNor’s contribution.

The project opens up an additional 30 acres of land. Tiffany Metal-Casting Ltd. has taken 16 acres of that land. Co-owner Mark Tiffany said he first proposed the idea of expanding the Orangeville-based family company here about 18 months ago. The company already employees 65 people with sales of about $10-12 million servicing municipalities, plus the mines, agriculture and port industries.

The company plans to start building in 2015 and already has one local staff member.

“We could like to capture other markets, and where we are located we can’t expand,” Tiffany said in a press conference. “All due to my wife we are in Parry Sound (initially as a cottager). So I started doing some digging and found the industrial park.”

Park board chair and McDougall Township Mayor Dale Robinson said the benefit from the government’s contribution would be quickly realized.

“We had a problem, but it was a good problem, we were running out of serviced land, but what comes first, the chicken or the egg,” said Robinson. “But now we have the chicken and egg coming together at exactly the same time, which is a good thing for us.”
