GF Casting Solutions produces for a variety of market segments: Light vehicles, commercial and off-highway vehicles, aerospace and energy, and the company serves customers worldwide – most of which belong to the automotive industry. The four technologies used in production are high-pressure die-casting, precision casting, iron casting and additive manufacturing.

GF Casting Solutions has 13 production sites in 6 different countries with one of them being located in Leipzig, Germany. The production facility was originally acquired by GF AG in 1995 and the property is 70.000 m2 in size with 35.000 m2’ under roof. The Leipzig iron foundry produces parts (weighing up to 1,200 kg) for commercial and off-highway vehicles, construction equipment, agricultural and forestry machinery, regenerative energy, engine technology and general engineering. The plant has 260 employees and a production capacity of 60,000 tons per year. Moreover, Leipzig is home to the largest moulding box for machine-moulded iron castings in all of Europe with the box size 2.500 x 1.600 x 500/500mm.

The Leipzig site of GF Casting Solutions is able to position itself as a full-range supplier. From the idea to series production, GF Casting Solutions Leipzig provides everything out of one hand. Customers are accompanied throughout the entire supply chain, with GF Casting Solutions assuming the role of the development partner; supporting customers with their know-how and competencies for several market segments.

The Leipzig innovation centre for additive manufacturing was originally opened in 2018. The advantage of additive manufacturing is that it enables the creation of nearly any shape, even shapes with complex cavities. This is achieved by printing sand cores layer by layer (unlike in the case of traditional, two-dimensional core-making).

Alongside additive manufacturing, the new 5-axis machining centre GF Mill E 1900 U ST has speeded-up the whole prototype process tremendously. Previously, castings had been processed by external service providers or had remained unprocessed entirely. Since the opening of the machining centre in 2023, however, GF Casting Solutions Leipzig is now able to complete each step of the value chain – especially for prototypes – internally. The link between 3D-printing, casting and machining allows the customers to reduce the time to market for new products enormously
