Reuters reported that Poland's utilities will build wind farms with record 500 MWs of installed power in 2011.
Mr Krzysztof Prasalka head of the country's wind energy lobby PSEW said that "Based on the information from investors, we estimate that this year it will be at least 500 MWs of wind based power. This is still very little given Poland's potential."
In 2010, PSEW estimates some 460 MWs of wind farms were built in Poland.
It may be noted that Poland is in over 90% dependent on coal as its energy source and struggles to meet the EU's strict environment criteria with wind farms, biomass and nuclear energy seen as most serious alternatives to coal. In the first quarter of 2011, wind based energy production in Poland more than doubled to 644 giga watt hours.
