Despite challenging economic conditions, the Turkish metal casting industry managed to maintain and even strengthen its position. The industry ranks 2nd in Europe and 7th in the world.
In terms of production volume, the Turkish Metal Casting Industry is the second largest in Europe and the seventh-largest globally. With production technology and quality exceeding global standards, the metal casting sector provides critical products to various industries, including automotive, white goods, machinery, agriculture, and construction. The sector employs approximately 70,000 people and makes significant contributions to closing the current account deficit through net export revenues. This makes our metal casting industry a strategic sector with a positive impact on the Turkish economy.
In 2023, despite tough economic conditions, the metal casting industry managed to maintain and even strengthen its strong position in Europe and the world. While the Turkish economy grew by 4.5%, the industrial sector was adversely affected by weak external demand and the earthquakes in February. Nevertheless, the Turkish Metal Casting Sector attracted attention by increasing its revenue and export figures.
In 2024, Türkiye’s metal casting industry is witnessing significant transformations and opportunities. While strengthening its position in the global competitive environment, the industry is also taking important steps in the fields of environmental sustainability and digital transformation. With innovative technologies, energy efficiency projects and environmentally friendly practices, the sector continues to maintain its leadership in the sector by developing a strong strategy for the future.
Türkiye’s Metal Casting Sector Prepares for EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism
The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), implemented as part of the European Union's Green Deal, represents a critical turning point for Turkey's metal casting industry. CBAM mandates carbon emissions-based reporting for the import of products in sectors such as iron-steel, cement, and aluminum. As a result, foundries exporting to the EU will need to develop strategies to reduce their carbon emissions. The Turkish metal casting sector is prioritizing emission management by creating a green transformation roadmap.
In 2021, Türkiye established a roadmap through the Green Deal Action Plan to align with the European Green Deal. Specialized working groups for CBAM, coordinated by the Ministry of Trade, bring together participants from the public and private sectors, civil society, and academia. TÜDÖKSAD actively participates in these efforts, representing the metal casting industry and voicing sectoral concerns at the national level.
Additionally, TÜDÖKSAD closely follows preparations for the National Emission Trading System, which is expected to be included in the upcoming Climate Law proposal. TÜDÖKSAD continues to work towards ensuring the sector’s compliance with related regulations, such as the Green Asset Communiqué.
12th International Foundry Congress: Focus on Sustainability
Organized under TÜDÖKSAD AKADEMİ, the 12th International Foundry Congress will be held from September 19-21, 2024, at the Istanbul Expo Center. This year’s theme is "Sustainability in the Metal Casting Sector," chosen to address environmental impacts and promote sustainable practices within the industry.
The congress will feature in-depth discussions on critical topics shaping the future of the sector and provide concrete solutions for a sustainable future. In addition to current developments such as the European Green Deal and the Carbon Regulation Mechanism at the Border, the congress will provide comprehensive information on green and digital transformation efforts in the industry for Europe, one of the most important export markets of the sector.
In the" Getting to Know Casting" event, which will be held for the fifth time in the congress programme, a casting show will be performed by the students of Istanbul Ümraniye Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School Metallurgical Technologies Area. This show will provide the opportunity for young talents to exhibit casting processes and techniques and will give the participants the opportunity to get to know the casting processes closely.
Additionally, the 6th Reflections of The Casting Exhibition will present the theme "The Modern Face of Turkish Casting," showcasing the innovative achievements of the Turkish casting industry.
On the last day of the congress, Saturday 21 September, the first ‘Workshop on Problem Solving Techniques in the Casting Process’ will be held with the contributions of Döktaş Dökümcülük. In this workshop, various casting defects encountered in the industry will be discussed and a comprehensive case study will be carried out to develop effective and sustainable methods for solving these defects. Participants will have the opportunity to enhance their problem-solving skills in casting processes.
The 12th International Foundry Congress will bring together key figures from the sector and provide a significant platform for developing solutions and strategies to promote sustainability in the metal casting industry.
