Tupy of Brazil has won a contract to produce <link http: www.foundry-planet.com _top external-link-new-window>compacted graphite iron (CGI) diesel engine cylinder blocks and heads for DAF Trucks NV, Eindhoven, Netherlands, building on the foundry’s growing list of CGI customers.
The <link http: www.foundry-planet.com _top external-link-new-window>metal castings, which will be produced at the Tupy Maua metalcasting facility using Swedish SinterCast process control technology, will outfit the 12.9-litre six-cylinder MX series of commercial vehicle diesel engines manufactured by DAF, a member of the global PACCAR group. High volume series production of the cylinder blocks and heads, which have a combined weight of more than 575 kg, started last month.
Last year, Tupy won two contracts to produce CGI engine parts at its Maua plant - a diesel engine block with initial volumes around 20,000/year and cylinder blocks for International Truck and Engine Corp, in Illinois, USA. CGI production at Tupy exceeds 10,000 tons/year.
Luiz Tarquinio, president and CEO of Tupy, said: ‘The DAF order represents another important step forward for CGI and Tupy and further reinforces the transition toward CGI in state-of-the-art commercial vehicle diesel engine cylinder blocks and heads.’ The MX engine was designed to satisfy new European emissions legislation and will be used in trucks sold under the Kenworth, Peterbilt and DAF nameplates in both the North American and European markets.
