Grede Foundries, Inc., has informed the City of Vassar it will close its facility at 700 E. Huron.

"The closing is expected to be permanent," Eric Ek, president of Grede Foundries said in a letter to the city.

"All employees will be separated during a fourteen-day period beginning on Jan. 9, 2010. There are no bumping rights in existence for employees except for those in the bargaining unit represented."

Most of the affected employees at the facility are represented by Local 564 of the United Steelworkers Union.

A total of about 178 employees will be affected by the closing. Grede is currently in active negotiations with a potential buyer to purchase the Vassar Foundry.

If the sale goes through, Ek said many of the employees may be offered employment with the buyer at the facility.

Details of the sale are still being negotiated and have not been made public.
