US - Teesside steel union chairman Mr Waterfield dies

Lesedauer: min

Local media reported that the rebirth of steel making on Teesside has been dealt a devastating blow with news that Mr Geoff Waterfield, chairman of the multi union works committee on Teesside, passed away in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A true man of steel, Mr Waterfield made an enormous contribution to the industry and battled tirelessly in recent years to save the Teesside Cast Products plant at Redcar.

Just three weeks ago Mr Waterfield said: “To see the blast furnace working again and the first steel cast will be the final part of the dream.”

The plant, which was taken over by Thailand’s SSI earlier this year, will restart production in just a matter of months.
