USA - Waupaca Foundry laying off 20% of work force

ETOWAH, Tenn. (AP) - Waupaca <link _top>Foundry will permanently lay off 113 employees because of a slowdown in the automotive marketplace.

The layoffs, effective Aug. 30, will reduce the plant's workforce from 505 workers to 392, The Daily Post-Athenian of Athens reported on its Web site.

Established in 2001, the <link _top>foundry manufactures <link _top>ductile iron <link _top>castings used for the <link _top>production of brake calipers, brake supports and automotive chassis <link _top>components. It also produces <link _top>gray iron <link _top>castings used primarily for rotors and brake drums in cars and heavy trucks.

The announcement comes a month after Waupaca's parent company, ThyssenKrupp Technologies, announced Phase 2 of its <link _top>plant expansion in Etowah is on hold due to a drastic drop in orders.
