Washington -- Federal aid approved for Oberdorfer foundry workers in DeWitt

Lesedauer: min

The U.S. Department of Labor has approved aid to 86 employees at the Oberdorfer foundry in DeWitt who are losing their jobs as the plant begins to shut down this month.

U.S. Rep. Dan Maffei, D-DeWitt, said he helped obtain the Trade Adjustment Assistance application approval from the U.S. Department of Labor. The program helps retrain workers who lose their jobs because of foreign competition.

The benefits include up to 130 weeks of full-time or part-time training, tax credits to cover healthcare costs, relocation allowances, and a wage subsidy for those workers who find new jobs where they are paid $50,000 or less per year.

"This support is critical for the Oberdorfer workers and their families who lost their jobs through no fault of their own, and will help them get back to work as quickly as possible," Maffei said in a statement.

Oberdorfer officials have said they would begin the first round of layoffs on May 11. The DeWitt plant is one Syracuse's oldest manufacturers, dating to 1875.
